PRIVATE TUITION

FOR ENGLISH

As a qualified teacher and native speaker of English with a PhD in linguistics, I offer individual online tuition in English from primary level through to GCSE. I teach both English language and English literature and can teach any set text. For GCSE students, I can work to any examination board, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, Cambridge, etc. Sessions are available online via Zoom.

WHAT DO YOU NEED HELP WITH?

Primary English (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2: Years 1-6)

I offer tuition in English for children at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. I provide help with reading, comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, fiction and non-fiction writing, and so on. I ensure that lessons are engaging and enjoyable, so that learning is as natural as possible. Extra help to prepare for Key Stage 2 SATs is also available. I also offer tuition for 11+ and entrance school examinations: please see separate 11+ Tuition page for more details.

Key Stage 3 English

For students in years 7, 8 and 9, extra tuition in the work which is taught at Key Stage 3 can be invaluable. A number of Key Stage 3 students who have tuition with me are non-native speakers of English and/or speak another language at home. Others may feel that they need extra help with the basics of English, while many others have tuition with me because they would like to get ahead in preparation for their GCSEs, especially with many schools now starting to teach GCSE English Literature in year 9.

I am happy to help students with the work they are completing at school, or I can provide a separate specialised programme of work that complements their schoolwork. Whatever your requirements at Key Stage 3, I would be delighted to hear from you.

GCSE English Language

For GCSE English Language, I focus on the specific reading and writing skills that are assessed in the language papers, working through sample and past papers with students to ascertain which areas need extra focus.

Features of my GCSE English Language tuition include:

  • detailed work with past and sample papers including example answers, and advice on how to structure writing, whether fiction or non-fiction

  • explanation and revision of writers’ techniques and their effects in fiction and non-fiction and of the correct terminology needed for describing those techniques

  • advanced tuition in higher-level concepts (e.g. polysyndeton and ideophones; plosives and fricatives) for those students aiming for top grades

  • extra reading of creative and persuasive writing texts to give students inspiration for the sort of writing they are required to produce themselves

  • additional practice of challenging aspects of the syllabus (e.g. 19th-century texts) and revision of spelling, grammar and punctuation, if needed

  • individual marking of all written work completed by the student, with detailed personalised feedback and a personalised programme of improvement to enable students to obtain the best possible grade.

GCSE English Literature

Many GCSE students find reading and analysing literature difficult, but my systematic and detailed approach brings real results. For GCSE English Literature, I teach all set texts on exam board specifications, including, but by no means limited to, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, A Christmas Carol, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies and Blood Brothers, to name just a few. I also teach poetry and short story anthologies where these are part of the specification, as well as preparing students for any unseen poetry questions they have to answer.

Sessions involve:

  • careful close reading of set texts with the student, analysing themes and literary techniques

  • additional focus on the contexts of the set texts, such as relevant information about the author, the social and historical context in which the text was written, or received ideas at the time the text was written

  • extra work on skills of poetry analysis and comparison, including poetry-specific concepts and terminology, (e.g. enjambement, caesura, rhyme scheme, etc.) and other language features (e.g. metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, etc.)

  • discussion of past and sample exam questions and preparation of essay plans, with a particular focus on structuring answers

  • individual marking of all written work completed by the student, with detailed personalised feedback and a personalised programme of improvement to enable students to obtain the best possible grade.
